News from Syria and Bitcoin:
Catching up on latest events I figure that everyone has heard about some of the events going on in Syria. Currently the country is undergoing a political upheaval which is very similar to what we saw in Libya. Rebel and anti-government factions have started to rally together to fight against the government and forces loyal to the local government and their leader Assad. The entire thing has quickly become a large mess lately.
We’re seeing a repeat of the crisis in Libya more or less where a giant upheaval happened there. There was a lot of irony in the fact that the US government gave aid financial and others to the leader of Libya for over ten years while ignoring the oppression and murder of his people. When the rebellion started it was a perfect reason for the US/UN troops to intervene and begin bombing the Libyan government while supplying the rebels.
Things only got worse for the locals living there though once the government in Libya was overthrown. Supposed loyalist troops have been rounded up, murdered, tortured and imprisoned without trial. People are opposed with little in the way of free speech. Along with this the constant bombing of Libya has ruined the landscape leaving much of the capital city and other cities in ruin.
It looks we’re heading for a repeat in Syria. While there hasn’t been huge direct government intervention that we’re aware the US government has admitted to arming rebel factions in Syria. Truthfully I don’t see how this can end well at all. People want to say that we have an obligation to spread freedoms around the world but they don’t think about what will really happen to the people.
We should let things play out in Syria as they do. Who is to say that if we help them overthrow Assad the current leader that they will be any better. They could potentially just end up in the same shape Libya is in now. There’s already been reports and claims from local news agencies in Syria that some people are being massacred by anti-government forces. Only time will tell but I’m afraid that we’re heading down the same path we did with Libya that will cost huge amounts of American and European government money, lives of innocent locals and the destruction of their homes.

Bitcoins:
Another interesting thing which I saw mentioned and wanted to talk about is the slowly growing popularity of bitcoins. Bitcoins if you haven’t heard about them are a type of digital currency which first came into being a few years back.
They are generated by computers running programs and using the CPU power to complete complex puzzles. They basically have value because people can only create them by using enough computer power for long enough to do so. It seems they are generated mostly from large P2P networks and programs.
The idea is interesting and creative especially since the currency is not currently regulated by any government. The concept is interesting since there is a slowly growing market on the internet where people will buy and sell bitcoins or use them for services. Now apparently a Swiss Pharmacy just recently announced that they would begin to accept bitcoins in payments as well. I’m not sure what the future will hold concerning this but if nothing else it is very interesting and worth keeping an eye on.
